Center for Geospatial Information Technology (CGIT) website
Redesign and Rebranding

Description

The aim of the project was to perform a complete overhaul of Virginia Tech’s Center for Geospatial Information Technology (CGIT) website and provide multimedia enhancements such as Flash content, audio-visual presentations, and improved graphics, wherever possible.

The project involved the reworking of the navigation system and the overall structure of the website to increase user satisfaction and improve the effectiveness of the content provided. The clients desired to have a site that more accurately advertised the department for the purposes of federal funding opportunities, and to develop partnerships with private companies and non-profit organizations.

Outcome

The new site featured many enhancements such as mega dropdown menus for navigation and progressive disclosure of information using expandable / collapsible panels and elimination of extensive (unnecessary) scrolling. The site also degraded gracefully on unsupported browsers. Flash content was embedded into the website. A video presentation of approximately two minutes was prepared and was optimized for both dial-up and broadband connections. A XML based news panel was also included.

Note: The website has since been redesigned again and is not reflective of the work outlined here.
